Soundtracks: Wet Confetti Laughing Gasping

laughinggasping.jpg Ever since we first discovered Alberta Poon last spring we've been scheming ways to get our hot little hands on every last necklace in her Frozen Peas Accessories line (especially Oddball Paul the Pony, featured on DailyCandy just yesterday). We heart Frozen Peas because pretty ponies and other such animals are our weakness, and because here they're drawn and silkscreened so charmingly you just want to snuggle them up till you can't breathe anymore. But we heart Alberta because she's one of those fiercely multi-talented crafty ladies, moonlighting as the bassist/singer for Portland's post-punk trio Wet Confetti, whose sophomore record Laughing Gasping (Pampelmoose) comes out today. Also very envy-inspiring is the fact that Gang of Four's Dave Allen produced the album and released it on his label, having taken a shining to Wet Confetti a few years back.

Unlike Alberta's hugging bear wallets and wooden fawn earrings, the new album's not all cute and cuddly and twee: There's a lot of dark synthy stuff going on, some super-intense and urgent vocals, a little heavy guitar sludge here and there. But it's still so catchy - thanks mostly to the bouncy basslines and dancey drumbeats - and songs like "Take My Advice" will get stuck in your head and not come out for a really long time. Download an mp3 of "Sorry Dinosaur" over at You Ain't No Picasso, and check the band's MySpace for more songs.
