We're Obsessed: Kuromi, A.J Smith, L.A. Vegan Yumness

All things Kuromi, sanrio.com

I'm like way beyond teenagerdom, numerically speaking, but I ain't ever gonna outgrow my love for all things Sanrio. I had a long-running thing with Chococat for awhile, but my new favorite is Kuromi, this bratty, punk-rock, boy-crazy bunny with a thing for temper tantrums and flying. Do you know what my favorite time of day is? Anytime I pick up my Kuromi pen and see that little devil bunny staring back at me! Life should be so simple, you know? (Kat)

The Illustriously Illustrative Illustrations of A.J Smith

Glasgow-based illustrator A.J Smith is one of the most self-motivated people I've ever encountered. Everytime I blink, he's put out a new issue of his long-running comic Khaki Shorts. He also sings in a comedy-rock band, designs really hot flyers for every last band in Scotland it seems, and wrote my favorite zine of all time, the heavily 60s psych-influenced Head Shop, which featured a series of articles entitled "The Kinks: A Komprehensive Khronology." I guess that title is pretty self-explanatory, but really- the "kontent" is way more "kommunicative" and "komical" than you "kould" ever imagine. I love A.J's illustrations mostly for their blatant psych-y-ness, for capturing ("kapturing") a Village Green-esque nostalgia for a bygone era that I am immensely paranoid is going to fade into total obscurity sometime during the next five years. Keep the dream alive, A.J! (Laura)

L.A.'s vegan eateries

flore.jpg I'm not a vegan, and I don't even play one on TV. I'm not vegetarian either, though I hardly ever eat meat. But lately I'm so into vegan restaurants - partly because I dig on their creativity, but also 'cause there's something about the idea of "purposeful dining" that's really resonating with me right now. Last week I went to Native Foods for the first time and stole a "Save the Chicken" Wing off my friend's plate (OMG, so yummers). Then on Saturday at the dangerously-close-to-my-house Flore in Silver Lake I got The Wrap (baked tofu, brown rice, shredded kale, and creamy tofu dressing all lovingly swaddled in a wheat tortilla), and basically that's all I can ever think about now. And tomorrow, if I feel I've earned it after helping out with a beach cleanup in Venice, I might go to the Real Food Daily in Santa Monica and get me a tempeh-and-fakin-bacon club sandwich. Oh, and I haven't been to the L.A. Soul Vegetarian yet, but the Sunday dinner I had at their Chicago restaurant a few summers ago was the stuff foodie dreams are made of. All in all, more fun than humans should be allowed to have, for real. (Liz)
