A Day in the Life: What's in our bags?
And now we introduce our new category, "A Day in the Life," which is really about documenting daily ephemera. Why, we don't know, but as we like to ask: Why not? We are always really fascinated by what's in people's bags, so we spill our literal guts out here. How about you? Tell us what's in your bag in the comments; if you feel like it, you can even email me a not-too-large photo and maybe we'll put up the pictures later. Why, you ask? Well, why not?
Liz's Bag of Cheap Tricks

I was gonna try to number all the items here, but that seemed like too much work. Besides, you know how to visually distinguish between a cell phone and a tube of lipstick, right? Right. Let's go.
The bag. I bought it a couple years ago at a truly loathsome mall store, but it's served me well. And for a fairly cheap thing, the leather's awfully buttery. (Sorry, vegans!)
Wallet. I voted! I voted again! Both those stickers are from 2008 elections, while the wallet itself is from like 1997. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's not one person in my life who hasn't poked fun at the ancientness of my wallet. Sticks and stones, dudes.
Celly. Speaking of ancient, here's my trusty old phone. I'm about 8 years overdue for an upgrade.
Kiehl's SPF 15 lip balm. A new acquisition; I luff the little hint of red.
Smashbox Photo Finish Lipstick. The color's called "Dazzling" and I'm not in love with it. My dream lip color is Fresh's Lady Tatami but it was discontinued a while back and we're getting to the point where I can't even find it on eBay anymore. Kinda tragic.
Notebook and pen. I got the awesome and glittery pad a little while ago at Le Pink, it's made by Ecojot (whose designer Carolyn Gavin runs this supercute blog). The pen was a gift from one of my mom's high school students; he had my name engraved on it, which was so adorable I almost died.
Sunglasses. Usually I buy sunglasses for five bucks at Venice Beach, and then I lose them two weeks later. This time I decided to spend a whopping $25 on a pair of Steve Madden shades, and they've worked out all right thus far.
Key chain. Proudly showing my Venice love, as well as my love for Arnie Morton's Steakhouse. (Sorry again, vegans!)
Perfume. It's Pacifica's French Lilac. I love me some Pacifica. This stuff's got more of a jasmine-y scent than lilac, so it smells lots like my neighborhood at night in the springtime. Bee-yooo-tea-full.
Laura Jane: She Never Knows When She's Gonna Need to Jam

Necessities: Wallet; passport (I got mugged two years ago and lost most of my IDs, so I carry around my passport all the time, which I will definitely regret the day I inevitably lose it); pencil case (it's this, but I think its trapped beneath the crossword puzzle book in this photograph); keys; notebook; novel; cigarettes & lighter
Luxuries: Evian spray; deodorant; Visine; spare contact lenses; Perfumeria Gal Violette lip balm (I've been brand-loyal as hell to this product since I was fifteen years old); crossword puzzle book; Fiery Furnaces CDs of choice, plus additional CDs jammed into FFs cases (my CDs get scratched a lot)
Extemporanea: Half-drunk bottle of lukewarm Diet Coke; often an additional drink too (in this case, it is a Crystal Light Pink Lemonade single dumped into a bottle of tap water); twenty billion additional lighters; garbage; bubblegum; a freaking thesaurus, for crying out loud!; a pinecone
Kat Lives Out of Her Bag
I'm a New Yorker, so I basically cart around a semi-giant bag all day with tons of everything in it because I leave my apartment at 10 in the morning and don't go back till late. Someone once told me that you shouldn't carry more than 10% of your body weight in your bag, which made me laugh because whoever figured that out obviously didn't live in New York. I actually go between a few different bags, so I subscribe to the multiple-bags-within-one-bag technique. I have to say, it really works, because I just move everything over in their mini-bags into a new bigger-bag and somehow I have what I "need." It kind of drives airport security slightly nuts, though. Anyway:
The bag itself: Marc Jacobs white Stella bag. Mine is so old and beat-up but it's perfect and I can even fit a laptop in there.
Andrea Brueckner gold metallic makeup clutch: I put my necessities in here: my Moto Q phone; a Baggu reusuable bag (it used to be a Target one but that finally died); keys, with a Louis Vuitton keychain an ex-boyfriend gave me; a Marc by Marc Jacobs wallet from the special items store; my MP3 player, which is not an iPod because I am oddly really anti-Apple (it currently has Depeche Mode, Neneh Cherry, Dead Meadow, Lil Wayne and a bunch of reggaeton loaded onto it -- reggaeton and hip hop are the only music I can go for a run to, everything else doesn't distract me enough from the pain of running)
Bryna Nicole makeup bag: where all my random grooming/beauty booty goes. Kiehls hand creme; Chanel No. 19 eau de toilette; Cover Girl Smoothwear LipTint, which they don't make anymore; Chanel Aqualumiere Sheer Lipstick in Catalina; Alba Botanica passion fruit nectar lip balm, Cover Girl eyeshadow in some color I don't remember because the label is worn off.
Paul & Joe owl clutch: isn't this so cute? It's from the Target line they did. This is where my "random yet somehow I need it often" crap goes. It has a Kuromi card case (which is odd, because I have no business cards anymore!), a Kuromi notepad, and some mini playing cards that I snagged from my nephew's birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese because you never know when a game of poker comes in handy. I also carry around loads of rechargeable batteries for my mp3 player and my camera (which you don't see here, but I carry it around)
A notebook from Bangkok: I love to carry things that remind me of being in Thailand. I have a special affection for things with English malapropisms, which is why this notebook says "My White Friends" on it and has pictures of eggs on its covers. Don't ask, I don't know.
My book: I usually have a book or magazine on my person for long subway rides or when I'm between appointments and can grab an iced tea somewhere. This is the book I'm reading lately: Mary McCarthy's The Company She Keeps.
Sunglasses: I used to carry around one pair of perfect, perfect aviators, but sadly, they got smashed. So now I have a pair of Abaete ones that are squared off and plain and a pair of slightly more amped-up Chanel ones.
Oh, and you don't see it but I also sometimes carry around an umbrella because it seems to rain SO RANDOMLY now in New York. And usually I have a snack and water, like Lifesavers or soy nuts or some weird nut-and-dried-fruit mix, but I ate 'em all up. That's definitely nogoodforme style, right there.

Cool, i just searched for something like what other people carry in their handbags. Reason was that we bought some plaything for our kiddies called "Grandma's Handbag" and wondered about all the funny stuff the old lady had in there. So we wanted to check what real people have in them.
Content of female family members handbags is known to me, so no surprises there, but to for the record: 2 babybottles w milk, 3 diapers, tissues, cell phone, keyring, wallet, lipstick, some cream (don't know for what), filofax.
Not much for a lady. Probabyl i left out a lot as there are so many hidden compartments in the big handbag.

Great story here.
Love what you said when Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election!; :
quote: It all started/escalated when I was "putting on my face" and the radio man announced Obama had won Pennsylvania, and I totally cried tears of joy all over my makeup. And then it was all uphill from there! Life is good; life is grand. Hooray for us all. I'm crying again, a little. Good night! (Liz)
