Bits and Pieces: sales, Whole World Reads, beauty, hot tunes
It's all happening, as they say, and on that tip we'd like to introduce the newest member of the nogoodforme.com team: our lovely intern Meggy! She's a literary lady with great vintage-y style, another former zinester -- and you can peep her bio on our About Us page. She'll mostly be a behind-the-scenes mover and shaker, but she is putting together the Bits & Pieces for us every week and will tell you all about our favorite sales, shows, and sites as they pop up.
+ Previously mentioned by Laura Jane and beloved by fashionistas the world over for carrying a trove of indie clothing and accessories (and yes, they do ship internationally), Pixie Market is currently having an end-of-season sale both on the web and in their NY and LA boutiques. Merchandise is up to 50% off and will continue to be so throughout the end of August and possibly Labor Day, so this might just be your chance to score a Milne dropwaist orange-and-silver dress or a colorblocked graphic t-shirt dress for the purposes of out-MIA-ing MIA. (Meggy)
+ As someone who's participating in a fiction MFA program and is constantly being asked whether or not books are "still relevant" in these newfangled, bits-and-bytes times, the Whole World Reads (Or at Least It Should) project is a good reminder that the answer is YES. The folks behind WWR have put together a blog chockablock with video clips of people reading their favorite literary passages, interviews, and questionnaires. One of my favorite bits is a discussion between Roshan Abraham and Jessalyn Wakefield about the short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" (Joyce Carol Oates). It's a little like the rest of the blog: reverent, but not afraid to smirk a little, either. (Meggy)
+ Who doesn't love Fresh, and who doesn't love free? Now both are coming together, as the Fresh store in NYC's Union Square invites their favorite clients (and you!) to a weekly beauty event. Every Thursday till 10/9/08, Fresh does complimentary mini-facials and beauty makeovers all day at their boutique, all while dishing out some champagne and strawberries. The event is free, but appointments are highly recommended. Contact the Union Square store at 212.477.1100 for more info or to make an appointment. Fresh Union Square, 872 Broadway, New York, NY 10003 (Kat)
+ Before emo, screamo, or whatever you want to call it, there was Portraits of Past, a seminal band that not a ton of people heard of -- but the ones who have still have their discography tattooed in the deepest recesses of their heart. The PoP faithful will be highly rewarded this weekend when the band reunites for a few shows in the NYC area. They're playing at Death by Audio on Friday, Aug. 29 and at Cake Shop on Saturday, Aug. 30. For more info: here. (Kat)
+ For a perfect little pair of round toed heels, wedges or t-straps before heading into fall, Clarabella NYC is having an 60-80% off sale on Friday, August 29th from 12 PM to 8 PM; labels include Williamsburg-based Tashkent, Marcello Toshi, and Korkease. (279 E. Houston Street, between Clinton and Suffolk. See here for more info.) (Meggy)
+ Take 15% off of purchases $20 or more at vintage-jewelry-and-gift-purveyor day-lab.com with the coupon code "1520daylab." The offer ends 8/28/08 at 11 PM, so act fast! I personally have my eye on some vintage "Best Friends" necklaces cooler than any Claire's purchase from the days of yore. (Meggy)
