Imaginary Shopping Spree: Oak NYC Free-For-All, Make Your Own Polo from Ralph Lauren Rugby

Tons of sales stuff at OAK

I always shied away from doing an Imaginary Shopping Spree at Oak simply because it's just way too easy to find tons of things I love there. It's such a no-brainer that it's almost insulting, because practically everyone (in my mind, at least) knows this site. However, I am completely over this logic at the moment, because what wins over logic each time? LOVE. What I love about Oak is that they have such a mix of my long-time fashion loves (Daryl K, Rick Owens, United Bamboo) but they are always bringing in new and emerging work, so I'm always learning about new companies and designers when I cruise the website. I love that they often find the most streamlined item in the girliest labels, as well as the most graceful and feminine piece in the more "difficult" lines -- their eye is always has a bit of a minimalist, kind of punk refinement to it, but everything is eminently wearable. It's basically the only shopping site that has made me wish I were super-rich so I could get everything I loved. Which is why I only let myself look at it, like, twice a month, because otherwise it kind of hurts so bad. (Kat)

1. I fell in love with navy blue this year, and this Rachel Comey silk top is kind of my idea of a super-pretty navy piece for evening. It's feminine but extremely simple. BTW, I love navy blue and black as a color combination. Everyone says it is wrong, but I don't care, I find it very chic.
2. This Alexandre Herchcovitch tank dress is beyond amazing: it's totally the dress you would wear all the time, everytime you went out, till you became known as "that girl who wears that cool square dress all the time." But you totally wouldn't care because this dress is so legendary and awesome, of course it would become your sartorial totem.
3. Anzevino & Florence is one of my favorite new labels and I will probably be telling you A LOT more about them once their spring collection comes out. Meanwhile, they did this Courtney dress (yes, named after LA LOVE herself) and it's pretty much the dress all the cool girls wore and it's sold out EVERYWHERE. But that's okay, this whole entry exists in the imagination anyway.
4. United Bamboo kimono dress! I have such great affection for the people of United Bamboo; they started up pretty much when I first moved to New York and I've always been excited for their success. I think this dress is just really simple and easy and the kind of thing you wear for years.
5. This Opening Ceremony frock looks way basic, but in the back of it is a sexy surprise. Don't you love that? Sometimes I like the obvious, but sometimes it's nice to go for the unexpected. (But sometimes going for the unexpected all the time becomes, well, expected. What a conundrum, no?)
6. I am sure a crafty genius can figure out how to make this Eairth knotted scarf. If you do, please email me the crocheting/knitting/macrame/whatever pattern and I'll totally do it. Thank you.
7. CLU do sort of haute couture t-shirts and they've slowly been expanding into dresses and such. When I become the sort of avant-garde hippie minimalist I'm going to be in my late 40s/early 50s, I would probably wear their stuff all the time. Till then, I would like to wear this black ruffle dress, which has just the right amount of girliness for me in a garment. It also has organic cotton -- yay!
8. This Don the Verb 18 Ways coat has supposedly really 18 ways to wear it. I think they should send it to me and I'll test this out. I would even do a rare personal fashion entry showcasing the results of this experiment.

Monogrammed "J.Crew on J.Crack"-esque polo from Ralph Lauren Rugby

Skulls, subverted prep, and my own initials? I could never ask for anything more. Generally, in life, I'll take monogrammed anything; if I had one wish, it would be to have all my cigarettes stamped with a mini-LJF monogram a la Diana Vreeland (only hers didn't say LJF, obviously). When I was at school in Manhattan, I would always camp out at Ralph Lauren Rugby between classes. I'm really stoked they finally have a website up, because their biz-ness RULES. These days my personal fashion concept is kinda haute-14-year-old-stoner-boy-from-1992; I'm positive this polo would do that shit Hella Justice. For the record, you can also Make Your Own rugby shirts and hoodies at the Rugby site, but you can't monogram them (just add patches and Ralph Lauren-branded embroidery), which is in my opinion pointless. COMMENTS!!

oh man, OAK! Getting their e-mail updates are starting to piss me off, but what a joy...a necessary, heartbreaking joy.

I feel pretty much spot on with you, but it's always best to keep in mind- you can usually make the same looks work without the same labels.

Oak are kind of going nuts lately with the email updates, aren't they? i agree, lots of their looks are simple enough to achieve without actually buying the stuff -- but it's also my misfortune to fall for the crazy-constructed, never-gonna-be-ripped-off-at-H&M pieces all the time :-(

Its great that you found such a good store. I hope mine is as good.

Say something so insightful and witty, it will blow us away. (No pressure.)

Got something to say? We'd love to hear it! Name, email and "type in the weirdo drunken text" thingie are all required to comment; don't worry, we won't email you or anything, we just want to make sure you're not an evil spambot. Keeping in mind the good-times mentality we like to keep going here, we've worked hard to keep NOGOODFORME.COM as fun as possible. We welcome all kinds of comments, but insults/abuse/general bitchery are not tolerated. In other words, we put the smackdown on evil troll posts. If you want to be a hater, please go elsewhere. Now, as Salt 'N Pepa say, "Only the sexy people..."
