Snapshot: Listening, Watching, Reading, Wearing, Wanting
+ Kat
Listening: Company Flow, Dr. Dre, Wu-Tang, the Misfits, Nirvana, Maximilian Colby, Unwound, Ratatat, Serge Gainsbourg, live Sinead O'Connor from 1988
Watching: The "Gossip Girl" season finale, which I enjoyed heartily despite the perpetual idiocies that plague the character "development" on the show; Terminator: Salvation (the first two films are better, but the Terminator series in general kind of rules); How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman (incredible film; it's a 1971 Brazilian historical black comedy, ostensibly about cannibalism but really about colonialism in Brazil, a lot more mild in execution than it sounds. Serious cineastes should look it up, really.) Oh, and this short from this year's Cannes: it's fantastic how emotionally engrossed you get in just four minutes. Poor little voodoo doll!
Reading: God, I'm still reading John Henry Days. This is the longest it's ever taken me to get through a work of fiction. It's fitfully compelling, but when it's on, it's totally on. Also: the issue of Vogue with Cameron Diaz on the cover, a bunch of scripts, "Hedda Gabler" by Ibsen (ooh, what a great character)
Wearing: a white tank top, Frye boots and this super-old pair of Earls that I've had since, oh, 2002? Straight leg, dark rinse, rise in the perfect place...best jeans ever. So sad they don't make them anymore.
Wanting: Life's good, dudes, what more do I need?
This is Sinead doing "Troy" live back in, hmmm, 1990? Intense...
+ Liz
Listening: I saw Ian Svenonius's band Chain and the Gang last night and they put on a good show but it all seemed horribly dated. But everyone else seemed to dig it, so maybe I'm just an asshole. Oh, and Calvin Johnson opened and I hated it.
Watching: the "Gossip Girl" season finale, which I didn't really understand, which possibly means I've gone stupid.
Reading: STYLE ICONS, PART DEUX (aka The Only Thing People Should Read Ever)
Wearing: my bougainvillea-pink short-sleeved silky button-down top with cutoffs and Iron Maiden vans, which my chiropractor said she's going to steal from me. Plus: Pigtails! Charm necklace! Baby-pink lipstick! So cute!
Wanting: a pink ouija board from Toys R Us! Exactly what every adorable satanist needs in her life.
HORRIBLY DATED, OR AMAZINGLY AMAZING?
(You could also pick option C, which is "Whatever, who cares?")
+ Laura Jane
Listening: The Remember version of "1917" by the Fiery Furnaces; mid-level lame shit like Luna and Edith Frost (Oh! Ah! It all makes me feel so contemplative); psych-y stuff for the summer, like "Backwards and Forwards" by December's Children and Present Tense by Sagittarius
Watching: I saw a Vetiver concert: unlike the Vivian Girls, Vetiver do not suck. The opener, The Papercuts, were really good too, only I can't stop calling them the Paperclips in my head. I also saw Taken with Liam Neeson, but does anybody care about that? I don't. Oh yeah, and James Franco as Justin Bobby.
Reading: STYLE ICONS, PART DEUX (aka The Only Thing People Should Read Ever); also, my new favourite website: Is It Iced Coffee Weather?, even though today it says it is not iced coffee weather, which is wrong, because I am drinking iced coffee right now, and it is perfect. This is the first time isiticedcoffeeweather.com has let me down, though. so I forgive it.
Wearing: Vans & a tan
Wanting: I wish today could be tomorrow? Just kidding! Today kind of rules.
JAMES FRANCO: MORE JUSTIN BOBBY THAN JUSTIN BOBBY, SOMEHOW:
Tags: 60's psych, a non-existent band named the Paperclips, bougainvillea, Chain and The Gang, Gossip Girl, Ian Svenonius, iced coffee, James Franco, Justin Bobby, nogoodforme.com, ouija boards, Satan, style icons, The Papercuts, Vans, Vetiver, wishing today could be tomorrow

I loved Earls! What happened to that brand? I still have my denim jacket by them.

That's neat that you enjoyed Vetiver, Laura. I like them a lot but have not seen them live. I think they're the only band that can do "alt country", probably because their music is not considered "alt country," I guess they do what "alt country" should have been but never was.

Earl got bought by a big corporation and they tried to relaunch it last year...but I guess it didn't work because the denim wasn't as good quality and the design was slightly different :-( Now I try to hunt out old pairs on Ebay; the originals lasted forever! xo k.
