Heavy Rotation: D.Lissvik, The Replacements, Patti Smith, Them, Jill & the Boulevards, Margo Guryan

D.Lissvik, "B2"
Sometimes pursuing a musical interest is like climbing up a tree. You start branching out, going here and there and up and up -- and then suddenly you look around and realize that there's no way you're going to get back down to earth easily. Tortured metaphors aside, lately I'm obsessed with anything and everything related to Studio, the Swedish electro duo I HR'd awhile back. Dan Lissvick is one half of Studio, and clearly he bringing a more meditative take to the Balearic good times. This is kind of shroomtastic, but it's also perfectly graphic-designercore, what with the pristine production and overall sleekness. Not to mention the latest entry into my ongoing Spiritual Scandinavia project. (Kat)
The Replacements, "Waitress in the Sky"
When I was a kid, the way I learned about music was through the Columbia Record Club. They had ads in all the magazines, cool ones with little stickers of records that you put on the card, and I used to save up the stickers and stick them all over my Trapper Keeper and fill out the card just for fun. It was through the Columbia Record Club that I learned that a band called The Replacements existed and that they belonged to a genre called "college rock." I had no idea what either was all about, but I did make a vow as an 8-year old that I would be devoted to both for some reason. "College rock" sounded cool, and there was nothing more that I wanted to be at that point but to be in college. Years later, you can imagine how utterly satisfying it was to discover the Replacements and know that my instincts as an 8-year old were right. Your inner 8-year old is always right. Now I'm just waiting for my Barbie sticker book story to come to life, where I go to Russia and become a reporter and wear perfect day-to-night dressing and Ken is my total slave. (Kat)
Patti Smith Group, "Space Monkey"
For the longest time I neither knew nor cared what the hell Patti Smith's singing from 2:18 to 2:25 of this song - I figured she was maybe just shouting "Aalkdjflkdasjf! Aakldjfkadjf! Akldjfk;adfj;a!", and that was good enough for me. But the day after the third time I went to see Patti read from Just Kids last week, I listened real close and finally got the lyrics right: She's saying "This is my jack knife! This is my jack knife! This is my jack knife!" That's so cool; jack knives rock and roll. You should hear the song I'm writing now, about jack knives. (Liz)
Them, "I Can Only Give You Everything"
On Monday at 9:06 a.m. I tweeted my 1,000th tweet, which read "you look like maybe you're in love. i'm really happy for you!" It wasn't completely genuine, but lately I'm trying to be more generous of spirit and maybe it's true what they say: YOU GOTTA FAKE IT TILL YA MAKE IT. Plus I hardcore believe in the beauty of choosing well-wishing over bitter jealous bullshit when it comes to ex-dudes finding new love, if only for karma's sake. As such, I dedicate both my 1,016th tweet ("u melt my chocolate caramel marshmallow heart") and this track to whomever I'm gonna fall in love with next, and also to my supercool semi-famous new Facebook friend I spotted at a gallery the other night but was too heartachingly shy to talk to. I can only give you lovin' till the sun goes down, bro. Beli'dat. (Liz)
Jill & the Boulevards, "And Now I Cry"
Remember the summer of 2005? Those crazy olden days, when every single thing was different from how it is now, except for the Beatles. In the summer of 2005, instead of writing for nogoodforme.com, I wrote for "my own Livejournal." One of my "Livejournal interests" was this band called Jill & the Boulevards. I was only marginally interested in Jill & the Boulevards, but I liked the way the words "Jill & the Boulevards" looked in that alphabetically-ordered mishmash of cultural totems meant to sum up the core of my being to peers and perusers. You just can't beat a good ampersand. They're so luxurious. Something cool that happened to me in the summer of 2005 was that, somewhere in England, one of Jill's Boulevards Googled "Jill & the Boulevards," and I guess my Livejournal came up, and then the Boulevard e-mailed me, asking me how I'd found out about Jill & the Boulevards and how utterly thrilled he was that I liked Jill & the Boulevards, and so on and so forth. But, back in the summer of 2005, I only had one priority in the world, which was "getting stoned on my boyfriend's balcony and telling him how cool I was," and so I never got around to e-mailing the Boulevard back. This is a huge regret of mine, but you can't change the past. Jill's vocal is proto-Grace Slick. (LJ)
Margo Guryan, "Timothy Gone"
Q: So, Laura Jane, how does it feel to have your entire dating history summed by the lyrics of a little-known chill out jam written by a Queens-born singer/songwriter from forty years ago?
A: Mostly: exactly the same. Also: it's pretty jarring. I feel like calling up Margo Guryan and asking her if she lives in my brain. But I don't think she does. It's validating. Comforting. I feel so understood! Am I a jerk? No. My intentions are pure. The vibeage, too. I feel so connected to the vibeage. If this song were a Beatles song, it would be the line in "Honey Pie" that goes "I'm in love but I'm lazy." And I think the "Tim anyway/him anyway" rhyme is the niftiest rhyme I've ever heard, and I guess having this song exist is pretty nifty in itself, though also "triggering." So yeah. Mostly: exactly the same. (Laura Jane)

Now, as Salt 'N Pepa say, "Only the sexy people..."

I think your spiel for "I Can Only Give You Everything" is one of my favorite things you've ever written, Liz.
