It's Our Birthday + We're Giving Away a $100 Shopbop Giftcard for Marc By Marc Jacobs to Celebrate!
Happy Birthday to us! This is the 7th year that we've been running this popsicle stand and we could not be more stoked. What started off as a mere fashion blog at a time when there weren't many others around is now the lovable hot mess you see and read before you. I started NOGOODFORME.COM when I still lived in San Francisco and wanted to read something on the Internet that was about how fashion was expressed in real life, not just through the runway or in fashion magazines. We've evolved to include tons of music and film and books and art and random WTF/OMGness, but at heart we will always be about girl/lady culture. It's been amazing to get Liz and Laura Jane on board and, most of all, to have awesome readers like you! Seriously, we love every single email, comment, Tweet and Facebook comment we get, and we especially love those who have been reading and interacting with us for awhile now. XOXOXOX!!!
To celebrate, we're offering a $100 giftcard for anything Marc by Marc Jacobs to one lucky human being, thanks to the good people at Shopbop. Do I really need to explain about the awesomeness and beauty that is Marc Jacobs? What I have always dug about Marc Jacobs is how he's always marched to his own quirky drummer, even in the face of faux "model off-duty style," endless fake-S&M and other trendy aesthetics. Sometimes I think I'm "over him," but then he does something so beautiful and individualistic that I remember that he's always been a champion of the kind of person whose loveliness comes from their uniqueness and creativity -- which is a NOGOODFORME kind of person, of course. He makes some of my most beloved dresses and bags (I've had a Stella in my stable for YEARS, it's so beat up now), and as much as I wander, I always return to him (and the amazing Marc by Marc Jacobs special items store in the West Village!)
Anyway, like we said, we are giving away a $100 giftcard to a lucky reader to use at Shopbop for anything Marc by Marc Jacobs. It can be applied to anything in his line, even the stuff on sale.
ALL YOU NEED TO DO is comment in this entry or on our Facebook page with a suggestion or two of something you'd like us to cover or something you'd like to read about in NOGOODFORME.COM. Or, if you think we're perfect just as we are (awwwww), then tell us some of your favorite entries so we can keep it coming. (And whatever you do, be sure to enter your email in the comment below or be sure we can message you via Facebook if you win! You'd be surprised how many people forget to do this!!) This giveaway runs till June 1st, so let the good times roll till then.
And always: thanks for reading NOGOODFORME, thanks for commenting and sending us email and may you all live and love under lucky stars.
xo Kat

no suggestions (creativity block...and you guys are pretty awesome as is, of course!), but I always enjoy "Is Astrology Real?" an awful lot...

I don't comment much, but I love NOGOODFORME.COM! The Kurt Cobain as a style icon post was pretty awesome. My suggestion: keep the '90s nostalgia coming.

Wow, I just found your blog, but I love the All-time-top-5. Kat's 2009 entry on Bubble Tea and Horror Flicks was awesome! ** site bookmark ** Love how varied the topics are.
Don't have Facebook so this is my entry! Good luck everyone!

I want regular installments covering Liz and LJ (Paul and John) as they face the many trials, tribulations, and awesome rewards of writing the most nogoodforme Beatles book evah. And I want it now! Also really liked your coverage of clogs-a shoe I can really respect. Get up to more mischief, I say, I need to read about it!
By Lily on May 19, 2010 11:46 AM
I am crazy about you guys! I first stumbled on your blog when Laura Jane's Guide to Stoner Girl Chic came up in a search engine while I was hunting for the name of a photographer I was interested in. (To this day I'm not quite sure how the two were related...) Anyhow, I laughed out loud reading it and spent weeks catching up on all your "back issues." Since then, I now read No Good For Me every day. You're a staple in my life!
I agree with Lily, I want to know more about this book Liz and LJ are working on and I need to read more mischief! Also, I loved when you guys each talked about what's in your medicine cabinets/purses, and I love sinking my teeth into a good solid Magnum Opus. I really like all the Superlatives, and Kat/Liz/LJ Investigates--Kat & LJ's recent "Is Astrology Real" investigations were wonderful. Laura Jane hasn't done any Thrift Scores in a long time, and I am totally jonesing for some!
I love you guys! Keep up the good work, and Happy Happy Birthday!!!

I agree on the Is Astrology Real? posts. I love Laura Jane's James Joyce of Fashion Blogger posts, and anything personal-essay-y by all of you.
It'd be cool to see a few more posts linking to other (very stringently chosen) blogs or mags or whathaveyous that you ladies are super into.
I also agree that the magic is in the wide variety of fashion/pop culture you post on, somehow all tied together by the writers themselves. :) So don't stop any of it. Happy birthday nogoodforme!

I loved the Ultimate Fashion Challenge! and also any imaginary shopping spree posts, I like how you show stuff that's more affordable as well as hot off the runways.
Also, more about movies!

I'm a pretty big fan of Laura Jane's manifestos. Reading blogs can become a bit tiring when the writing is poor, so I love when LJ lets her talent shine through. It's tough to be a good writer, but she's managed to cultivate her own voice. And, of course, her voice is a good one.
My other favorites are the James Joyce of Fashion Bloggers posts. ...Okay, Laura Jane, how are you able to make the most common things (Big Gulps?), like, totally cool? And it's great to see the construction of outfits and concepts from a wardrobe that can easily be understood.
I'd love to see videos from the three of you. Words can only say so much, so vlogs or video segments would really give you guys a chance to let yourselves come across even more. I loved the old videos you guys did. Start 'em up again!

laura jane: how to make a big gulp bong. try it out.
By zoe on May 19, 2010 4:10 PM
Long time reader, first time commenter! But... I might try it more often from now on. Because boldness is important!
One of my favourite things about NoGoodForMe.com is that your nostalgia posts in particular are really original and don't follow the sorts of trends that a lot of other blogs do. For example, a lot of blogs seem to be doing the whole 90s revival thing right now, but nogoodforme's angle is probably the freshest.
(And the only one to reference the Chili Peppers enough!)
Also, The Beatles are great and all, but The Monkees and The Kinks get plenty of love here too, which I like! More of them please!
I really liked the Ultimate Fashion Challenge, (but then, I'm obsessed with games and challenges and that sort of thing in general!) so I would recommend more of that sort of thing!
Also, I just in general really like how this feels like a 'Young Woman' kind of blog, it's not too teenagery and it's not grown up and adult to the point of elitistism and 'tastefulness' (in the sense of a euphemism for BORING). The balance is best. Thank you for entertaining me so much!
xx

Two things that particularly enthuse me about NGFM: (1) the way you write so true sometimes about, like, the 'raw humanity' of yourselves, and (2) when you write about music. Because I hate reading music journalism, but I like reading your music journalism. Because that isn't the entire singular point of the blog but it IS massively important?
I come here to get a continuing education, basically, so uh.. more of the elevating same? Please?
By Claire on May 19, 2010 6:28 PM
i really like the astrology posts. probably my favorite one was the one about perfume. more posts like that would be cool, but right now i'm blanking on other things that it could be applied to. (i know this sentence is really awkwardly worded, i just woke up from a nap)
anyway, i really really love you guys! keep it up and happy b-day!
By bethany on May 19, 2010 7:01 PM
Happy Birthday and many returns of the day! I have been reading your blog daily since a friend of mine introduced me to it 2 or 3 years ago. I even came to your spirit animal party in NYC which was pretty stellar. I am always a fan of the astrology posts. I am a cancer leo cusp but my next perfum choice will be the cancer recommended Chloe perfume. I also love the variety of your styles, fashion and otherwise. You guys create a good balance. I love the imaginary shopping sprees so more of those also maybe a post where each of you plans your ideal party i'd love to see the ideas and differences/similarities.
By Robin on May 19, 2010 9:45 PM
echoing the majority of comments here, more astrology (like the beatles & perfume)! magnum opuses, stories about songs, how to dress yourself, james joyce, seasonal fashion concepts, how to live... all the perfect mix of personal & pop culture & style, though lengthy (sorry!-if only i could pay you to do this stuff). ix is always good as well. i've been enjoying Liz's coverage of the spin archive too. and style icons, of course!
and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! i feel so lucky to know about this blog that totally transcends the medium. there's the writing, which is sometimes completely absent on fashion blogs, and when other blogs do have writing it's usually like that review of "i'm going away" that Laura Jane jokingly posted a while back. staid. plus you have fresh references. and the three of you together (your styles, interests, voices) make the perfect venn diagram.
ok i'll stop.

Happy birthday =)
This is the only blog I read with any regularity, because your site satisfies an awesome and necessary niche of fashion writing that transcends name-brand labels or mass market appeal and embraces something way more unique. In short, what you are doing is similar to something I've always wanted to do! Seeing you three do it with such originality gives me motivation to get where I want to be as well.
That said, I do love the Style Icons articles. You write about people who don't just wear cool clothes, but who actually stand for something--and who, admittedly, wear very cool clothing.
I love your site; keep it up!

By amber on May 20, 2010 2:21 PM
I love this blog the way it is.
That said, my favorite new thing is LJ's bravery (well...I guess that's actually not so new), and her decision not to post a picture of herself yesterday, even though she knew she looked fucking awesome. I know how much it takes to resist little trappings of sickness/sick behavior, and I really respect her for being so aware of that. Incorporating real life in a non-cheesy way into anything related to fashion is such an alarmingly novel concept.
I also loved Kat's posting about being a night owl! Lastly, I think that Liz is from Worcester - is that true?!
As for suggestions for future posts: nail polish mixology!

NGFM.com has the same birthday week as Jezebel! Which is cool because they are the reason I found you guys. Someone over there linked to LJ's "Stoner Chic" post, I believe, and I loved it.
I loved the Ultimate Fashion Challenge. I love when Laura writes anything about her life - I too am recovering from an eating disorder, and also a stoner who is obsessed with the Beatles and Jay-Z (we have the same birthday!). So I can dig it, if you will. I love when Liz mentions Venice Beach, because it is my favorite place in California, if not all of America. And her post on Kurt is one of my favorite things ever, as I've been super-into him for almost 10 years now.
The only things I want more of are DIY posts and probably astrology posts. I know nothing about it but you make it sound so interesting.
All of you have amazing taste in music. The end.

Though I can’t remember how I stumbled onto this blog, I’m damn glad I did! I’m still working my way through some of the old stuff, but because I am absolutely, completely obsessed with the Beatles, the posts on them are my favorites so far. Whether it be the Beatle Photo of the week, the spot on Astro-Beatles Power Hour (being a Libra I love John Lennon and the quirkier Beatles songs, though they are all amazing) or just the random proclamation that George Harrison is sexy. They all make me laugh, and they all make me very happy!
I will keep reading this blog, older posts and newer posts, and I’m sure I will find more to mark as favorites. Keep up the good work and Happy Birthday!! (You say it’s your birthday, Well It’s my birthday too- yeah, they say its your birthday, we’re gonna have a good time!) ;-)

Bonne fete No Good Fer me.
(Sept: *cep-t)
1. I wouldn't mind reading a blog on " how to have AN EPIC BIRTHDAY PARTY: A FAIL-SAFE solution to MEGA MADNESS" or "How to have a great birthday where it is extremely difficult to be bored". Includes: Themes, what tunes to play, what food to eat, what to wear, how to decorate". Heck! a NGFM fandom birthday- In a way you'd be inadvertently celebrating yourself. If you wanna "say no to Ego", then, in a way it's like a surprise party..because the host doesn't really need to plan, they just pick, follow the instructions and see what ensues! we could even report back with our attempts.
eh eh. No one really wants to cry at their party. This way, we could blame NGFM..haha Saving the day in all sorts of ways.
2. Fashion Crimes
How to wear monstrosities well and where you shouldn't go in them.
A juxtaposition of "abnorms".
or
3. Insight into Apartment "H"
A blog inspired by creeping new apartments. Goin' to house openings? posin' as potential renters..seein' what digs you find. Architectural Ju-jubes, if you will.

I know it isn't too original but I want to see something à la Ginnifer Goodwin role model/super hot girl style. I was thinking perhaps you three could each pick five of your favourite curvy role model women of all time and compile it into a list of super awesomeness. As a voluptuous girl who will never be super skinny or twig shaped it was really nice being able to see a woman who was super amazing and not shaped like a boy because that's sort of what is seen as more ideal in mags and what not.
I think you should also have a thrift store off with us readers voting on the winner. Maybe if you were let lose in your fave second hand store and had to make an outfit in a half hour and take pictures of th amazing thrift store adventures that ensue. We could pick the best one.

I've been trying to think about what I can write to you guys to show much I fucking love you, while still sounding clever and witty. I basically have nothing. Part of me feels dicky for only commenting you guys when you're giving out giveaways. Just wanted to say, I adore your blog probably more than any other blog out there. I check nogoodforme about a bajillion times a day and half of your hits are probably from me (sorry about that). I've been reading your blog for probably about one to two years now. The first post I think I ever read was the one were (where?) Laura Jane talks about fucking the Beatles. Sleep with George Harrison, and feel guilty about it. Sleep with Paul McCartney, and don't feel guilty about it. Don't sleep with John Lennon, and feel guilty about it. And don't sleep with Ringo Starr, and don't feel guilty about it. I still remember, I thought we were so compatible Beatles dudes wise. Me and my cousin were in total awe that someone was as obsessed as we were about the Beatles. Only, I think I've might've fucked John Lennon back then if I had the chance. '64 - '66 era was the best John I think.. Anyways, I looooove you guys so much and hope you continue the blog forever. All of you bring a little something different/extra to the site and I think that's what makes it best of all. Be my bestfriends?
Love, Sophia

dear K+LJ+L,
i absolutely loved loved loved the fashion challenge where LJ wore a million different outfits, and wasn't allowed to repeat any of the same clothes.
kat and liz, i'd be intrigued to see you two do it, too! is it possible to make a graduation gown wearable?
i also liked the clothes to wear on a date with . . . series.
however, the number one thing I like is heavy rotation, because it's introduced me to a few new bands i've liked, like the konki duet.
the wearing/reading/listening/wanting updates always make me smile for some reason. they make me feel more in touch with all of you.
TIPS for future entries --
-can you do a heavy rotation for songs about rage, songs about moms, songs about dads, songs you can play around small children without them picking up vulgar language, songs that are good for crowded bus commutes and waiting in line, songs about funny ways to deal with unwanted male attention, songs about getting no attention at all, songs that can make you fall asleep faster than Ambien or an economics textbook?
-can you do a volume 2 of the empowering women heavy rotation?
-can you do more rap in heavy rotation?
-can you post a few recipes?
-for some reason, the co-written blog posts are especially funny. consider doing more of them.
-i like the arch tone & humor in some of LJ's posts. i like Liz's photography. I like much of Kat's music.
LOVE,
katherine

I'm a big fan of Heavy Rotation and the Imaginary Shopping Sprees those have been my favorite. Mostly because at this point, I feel like I can guess which poster is which before I even read the end tags.
Keep up the amazing work. I've got no suggestions other than one day there needs to be a nogoodforme.com meetup.

happy birthday, ngfm! I love the way each of you writes. I love "stories about songs" a lot. I also really liked the Fashion Challenge. So, I guess my suggestion is to combine those two things somehow, like a match-your-outfit-to-the-song-that's-playing-the-night-before-at-a-certain-time challenge. Hmmm.

I adore this blog, and used to read it a long time ago until I quit my crappy job and lost all my bookmarks from when I used to read nogoodforyou instead of doing my filing, sighh. Now that I've rediscovered you, I am fully back at it! I love it, the perfect combo of unpretentious fashion and music. I think you're great as you are, but my suggestions for things you maybe have not covered:
-Fashion based on the girls in the hilarious Japanese horror flick "Hausu" (if you haven't seen it, Laura Jane, I think you'd love it). Maybe you could dress as one of the girls each day, as a fashion challenge!
-It would be awesome if you did some crafts from a vintage craft book...macrame, etc! I know you don't do a lot of crafts on here, but that just means us normal people can relate to your crafting even more! I'm no Martha.
Thanks! Keep doing what you're doing!

Thanks!
