Snapshot: Listening, Watching, Reading, Wearing, Wanting

+ Kat

Listening: The new Fever Ray cover of Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street"; and I finally listened to the entire record of Have One on Me, which was slow-going. Sorry, dudes, that album could've been edited way down to one totes brilliant record instead of a decent triple LP. EDITORS. WE ALL NEED THEM.
Watching: We watched Star Trek again at Hudson River Park and it was a real, real treat. I really do hope we're all still listening to the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" way in the future. And Spock is still hot. And J.J. Abrams and I have the same birthday! That is so exciting to me. Also, footage footage footage...
Reading: The script I'm directing this Saturday! And my shot list! And the September issue of Vogue with Halle Berry on the cover.
Wearing: A dress I got at JCPenney, a cashmere cardigan from Uniqlo and flip-flops.
Wanting: MONEY MONEY GOOD FORTUNE UNIVERSE KEEP GETTING ME WORK I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT THANK YOU AND SPOCK THANK YOU AGAIN STOP

Let's just watch the whole car chase scene in Star Trek, okay? It will make your day:

+ Liz

Listening: Aerosmith & J. Geils Band, whom I saw last Saturday at Fenway Park and it was my favorite
Watching: The Runaways & Mad Men & The Departed, which is a good movie entirely because of its use of "Well Well Well" by John Lennon
Reading: haphazardly selected sentences from a D.H. Lawrence short story collection; To Have Not by my friend Frances
Wearing: Aerosmith shirt & cutoffs & those shoes. But I wish I were wearing high-waist flared jeans.
Wanting: a J. Geils Band shirt & to marry Peter Wolf & also some high-waist flared jeans

Imagine if I was like 'WARNING: THIS VIDEO CONTAINS GOOD VIBES!'??? But it does!

+ Laura Jane

Listening: Poundy footsteps down the hallway. Sounds like somebody's late for work and stressed out about it!
Watching: And oh what an episode of Mad Men it was.
Reading: Still A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man but hopefully by next week the answer to this question will be Ulysses
Wearing: Vans slip-ons with a picture of a skull wearing a headdress; knee-high lace-up Frye boots; bloodshot sleep-deprived eyes; running shorts
Wanting: A puppy just like Davy's "Susie," his handwritten guarantee, and permission:

i really like the part where it says "And here's still another wonderful ear-drop for you."

i wish roger sterling would direct EVERY EPISODE of 'mad men'!

Kat - I think "Have One on Me" is a most excellent masterpiece and I LOVE that it is 3-albums long, for the novelty of that concept, and because you can put it on when you get home from work and listen to it through dinner and until you go to bed (at least I could when I used to get home around 8:30 and go to bed at midnight). I love how it flows and does so many different things. I love that I finally like/love something by her because my boyfriend was obsessed with her for years and I absolutely couldn't stand her music until this album.

Liz - man, I used to have the best pair of vintage high waist flared jeans. But I don't any more.

Listening: aw man, I became a big sucker for some band called Avi Buffalo, who are younger than I am, doing some song called “What’s in it For?” It is like the perfect summer song and it makes be obscenely happy when it comes on. I am so thrilled that a song can still do this when you are 27. Also this week once I drove by a bunch of GOP-ers flying signs, and I was wearing pigtails and gave them a stern look while listening to “Hotcakes” by Gas Huffer loud with the windows down. Sometimes it is SO COOL to be me.

Watching: I took a bunch of pictures of flowers/weeds/dead foliage in the field by my work.

Reading: “A Complicated Kindness,” a Harper’s article about a cult movie called “The Room” and its totally bogus director/producer/star (now must see out of curiosity).

Wearing: I got to wear my mega-modest bathing suit twice this week! It’s a black and gray diagonal plaid halter top and a black bottom with bun-covering overskirt. I have a weird tanline now. I was suprised how many girls swimming in public places wear mis-matched bikinis with no regard for color or pattern, but it was kinda cool.

Wanting: Americans to not be so fucking stupid about politics and the non-mosque at the non-sacred space of non-ground zero and to figure out how I can support & be in solidarity with the Muslim community.

i did too! i bought them at salvation army and they had the coolest pockets and i miss them forever.

Liina, i think we'll have to respectfully disagree about Have One on Me. i'm coming from a different place, though, because i really liked Ys and her first record. my dude also thinks HONM isn't recorded as well as her other records because her vocals are buried on some tracks and that's a bummer. also, i think the most perfect records are 45 minutes long at most :-) but you should see The Room! it kind of must be seen to be believed...it's INSANITY!!!!

xo k.

Listening: I've listened to "Blake Says" by Amanda Palmer and "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" by Wilco a bunch this week, which is weird for me because I've never really listened to those songs outside of the context of pining for two very unattainable dudes. I listened to "Blake Says" while walking to school pretty much every day this past fall, and then "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" in the winter. Gawd, I can be so cool-y lame sometimes.
Watching: I watched "Shaun of the Dead" at my boyfriend's house a few days ago. Did not enjoy. Zombies are gross, even funny zombies.
Reading: I'm finishing up The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusak for school. I actually greatly enjoy it.
Wearing: newly thrifted woven granny shoes+newly thrifted plaid skirt (with pockets!)+short sleeve white sweater+whale hair pin

By Clara the annoying sixteen-year-old on August 20, 2010 3:30 PM

Kat - agreed! & I will definitely see "The Room" if I ever have time to watch a feature length film ever again. The Runaways is the only movie I've watched since the end of May! Weird!

This post has three of my absolute favourite things: John Lennon, Spock and puppies! Well done!

I really want to do something like snapshot on my blog but there's only 1 of me and I don't think my interests are diverse enough lately to be interesting. At least I can participate on here...
Listening: at this moment a really great psychedelic song by Spirit called "I got a line on you" which I am enjoying very much.
Watching: Mad Men, True Blood, Huge, yesterday I watched the Sex and the City movie part 2 and while I am not a big sex and the city enthusiast generally, I did like it better than the first one for the feminist political undertones
reading: seymour, an introduction
wearing: an oversize grey t-shirt, purple cut-off shorts, brown moccasin flats
wanting: more than a 2-day weekend so i can spend more time on the beach before summer is over :(

ahhh thanks
that was cathartic

LJ: Does this mean in a few weeks you'll be finishing Ulysses and moving on to Finnegans Wake? Because you should definitely blog the highlights of that.

Listening: The new MIA album (especially XXXO). I bought it to feel current, because the last time someone asked me what music I listened to, I answered "Classical radio" and they laughed.
Watching: Zombieland and developing a crush on that curly-haired guy. Also it's incredibly gory. I don't recommend eating and watching this.
Reading: The Iron Whim: A Fragmented History of Typewriters, which is pretty cool, though full of a lot of bullshit PoMo critical theory. Did you know a criminal was convicted by the uniqueness of his typewriter imprint before one was convicted by his fingerprints?
Wearing: My waiter's outfit, which is all black, oversized, and smells like marinara sauce. (Would prefer to be in the super-soft tri-blend AA T I got in the mail today. I should change.)
Wanting: For it to be August 27th so I can be on vacation watching the races at Saratoga Springs (which will make me feel super posh).

I'll be Finnegan's Waking it by October

LISTENING: Rosanne Cash's cover of "Girl From the North Country."
WATCHING: Either Days of Being Wild or The Hunger later. Maybe just the rain.
READING: Jeanne De Clisson's bio: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_de_Clisson
WEARING: A beige vintage slip, an emerald ring I bought at Kmart after too much champers at Angel's Share years ago
WANTING: A Christian Wijnants hooded cloak, guitar lessons

i am THRILLED that lauren cerand did a reader snapshot!

i too am thrilled that lauren did a reader snapshot!! Days of Being Wild! Such a great movie! xo k.
