bits & pieces: the bummed edition

"Bummed" is not really the word for it when you hear about the extremely tragic death of someone you peripherally know. But the Internet trudges on, and so do you. Sorry for the downer of a post.

+ If you are a tiny bit of a grammar nerd, or love punctuation, or just wonder whether or not you're a jerko for hating the co-worker who puts five !!!!!s after SEE YOU ON FRIDAY in his/her emails, this article by Stuart Jeffries ("The Joy of Exclamation Marks!") will probably make you smile. Happy fact: there is a town called Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!.

+ Forget your frou-frou letterpress name card whatnot etc. -- I know you want a business card made out of meat. (Sorry, LJ, and All Veggie-Types Out There.) Meat Cards are jerky with your important information laser-cut into them. Samples include those for Patrick Bateman. Oof. (Thanks for the tip, Carolee.)

+ Favorite online shop Creatures of Comfort is having their end-of-season blowout sale -- Rachel Comey, Peter Jensen, Araks, etc. If you live in LA, head to 7971 Melrose; if you're browsing on the webby-web, go to http://shop.creaturesofcomfort.us.

Tell someone you care about that you love them today.

bits & Pieces: houndstooth pop-up

Good ol' LJ has passed on this tidbit of fantastic information for you NYC gals:

+ Pop-up store hosted this weekend in Greenpoint! Perfect for vintage, Houndstooth stock and jewelry, books, records, etc. (and for you to sell your biz if you're looking to do that sort of thing). Saturday from 12 PM - 8 PM; located at 95 Eagle Street, #1. And because we're in a new, Facebook-y kinda era, here's the Facebook down-low about this endeavor.

Bits & Pieces: Fence reading, recommendations, Satine sale

"If a writer does his job right, what he basically does is remind the reader of how smart they are. Wake the reader up to stuff that the reader's been aware of all the time." -David Foster Wallace

+ Monday, March 9 at 7 PM -- Housing Works Bookstore/Cafe is hosting a Fence (rad lit mag) reading, featuring Joe Ashby Porter, Shelley Jackson (no, not Shirley Jackson -- I made that mistake, too), Carolla Dibbell and Ranbir Sidhu. (126 Crosby Street, New York, NY, 212 334 3324)

+ Nick Hornby talks about those thorny words: "I think you'll like it." (To wit: Someone recommended the 2006 film The Fall to me recently, and I liked it.)

+ And then there's Satine's final markdown sale, featuring up to 85% off select biz in-store and ONLINE (that's for all you non-Angelenos), including Tsumori Chisato, Erin Fetherson, 3.1 Phillip Lim, etc. from now through March 8. (http://www.satineboutique.com) or (8117 W. 3rd Street, 323 655 2142).

Bits & Pieces: designer wardrobe?, polaroid, opening ceremony sale

Is everyone else really ready for winter to be over? In other news, I gave away my only pair of jeans a few weeks ago. They'd shrunk in the wash, but jeans don't protect you from harsh climes anyhoo!

+ How does one create a designer wardrobe on a budget? Is such a thing even desirable when you could buy, like, one hundred really soft white t-shirts (my fashion Kryptonite) for what it costs to buy one leather Alexander Wang blazer? See Painfully Hip's "How to Build A Designer Wardrobe on A Budget" for thoughts, tips, and a picture of a really fine pair of Mary Janes.

+ Obsessed with Polaroid? (Of course you are.) If you haven't heard of them already, Polapremium is an amazing source for rare Polaroid films and cameras. I just got an email today hawking the 600 Matte and the 779 Stripes. Click-click!

polaroid.jpg

+ Opening Ceremony in LA is having markdowns of up to 75% off of Proenza Schouler, Band of Outsiders, Alexander Wang, OC, etc. (451 N. La Cienega Blvd; 310 652 1120). And it's old news by now, but OC has also opened an e-store for Internet window-shoppers to break the bank at.

Bits & Pieces: Mirror/Dash for Urban Outfitters online now, Clarabella online sale, who's going to that McQ for Target thingie this weekend?

+ Kim Gordon's line for Urban Outfitters, Mirror/Dash, is now online. Sonic Youth is a source of intra-blog nogoodforme controversy (ok, no, it isn't, I'm just bein' a drama queen), but I personally will always think Kim Gordon is awesome-eternal. I actually like some of these pieces a lot; I feel like they could work in a variety of different wardrobes and are a bit more timeless than other UO items. The question mark remains in the "Quality" column, but the line itself is supposed to hit stores on February 16 -- so maybe I'll swing by and check it before I wreck it.

mirrordash_1.jpgmirrordash_2.jpgmirrordash_3.jpg

+ We're the gift that keeps on giving here, and so we'll always tell you when Clarabella, a dear nogoodforme beloved, is having a great sale. Right now there's one going on at Wunderbloc at their online store, which goes from now till February 19th. There's lots of shoes, jewelry and bags on sale, some of which at pretty ridiculously awesome prices. THEN they're having an in-store sales blowout from Saturday, February 21 to Sunday, February 22nd where all shoes and boots are going to be 50-80% off and a whole lot of other stuff will be deeply discounted as well. I have to confess, I didn't tell y'all about this right away 'cause I wanted to make sure that I got the boots I wanted in my size. Can you blame me? Size 6 = NEVER ON SALE. But you can snap up these other super-pretty things and more right now in the privacy of your own home:

clarabella_glassclusternecklace.jpgclarabella_goldenteardrop.jpgclarabella_leafearrings.jpg

+ Alright, New Yorkers...who is going to the Target pop-up store for the McQ for Target collection this weekend? (Details over at Racked, natch.) Should I bother? Is it worth it? Would you all be interested in hearing about it? I'm not super-excited about the line (although I LOVE that they're featuring Liela Moss from the Duke Spirit on the t-shirts), but I'm always curious about how these things really turn out in real life.

Bits & Pieces: Lavish & Squalor's Recession Appreciation Event, ITC, novelmania

It's been a brisk day here in Michigan -- the kind where your face hurts and the condensation on the scarf over your mouth freezes as you breathe. So goes time for a gal like me to ramble about the cyberweb like a sixteen-legged spider, searching out goodies, tidbits, and, well, bits and pieces.

+ Yo, Toronto! Lavish & Squalor (253 Queen St. West) is having a "Recession Appreciation Event" for THREE DAYS ONLY, during which the entire freakin' store will be up to 70% off. That's February 6th, 7th, and 8th's worth of sales. Designers and labels include Cheap Monday, Blood is the New Black, Fred Perry, and Insight. If you've been freezing your sorry arse off in the cold, consider it a way to get on someone else's thermostat while cheering up your day(s). (Meggy)

+ I've been making my way through this reading list for school (present book: Moby Dick) and I think that, despite all of my caterwauling, "Great Books" are a damn fine thing to wrap one's head around. For a taste, see one man's idiosyncratic list of The 100 Greatest Novels. (Meggy)

+ Gala Darling (of the same domain name) has recently begun the iCiNG Transformation Challenge, which is kind of like a big ol', sparkly, rah-rah support group for individual change. It might sound a little bit cheesy, and one of the icons has a unicorn on it*, but something about her pure enthusiasm is really catching without being subtly self- loathing or self-flagellating, the way a lot of Change Yourself stuff is nowadays. (Meggy)

*I like unicorns. Maybe you don't.

Bits & Pieces: 2009, ideeli, the selby, sketchbook project

It's 2009 and I'm watching "Dr. Phil" opine while it snows outside. 'Nuff said.

* ideeli is my new obsession. Sign up and be alerted to major day-long sales for things like te cesan (N. Portman's vegan shoe line), Ferragamo clutches, and MJacobs watches and lockets. And if you've made a New Year's resolution to refrain from spending (despite what those Econ Types keep saying about stimulating the economy), ideeli does regular giveaways. Would you like a fuschia Valentino purse with a GIANT bow on it, for free? Sign up and you just might win. Or don't sign up, so that I might have a better chance. (Meggy)

* The Selby is a website filled with amazing photographs of beautiful, smart, talented creative-types in their domiciles. Daniela Kamiliotis, Annakim Violette, Alexander Wang, and Meryl Smith are some of my favorites. Now I want a wall of pinned bugs in my apartment. (Meggy)

* The Sketchbook Project = WAY COOL. Send them $18 and they'll send you a blank Moleskine. Then you fill it and send it back. The result? Art House will take your sketchbook (among others) on a six-city tour to galleries and museums across the U.S. I signed up and am eagerly awaiting my sketchbook. (Meggy)

Bits & Pieces: dunzo with holiday shopping?

Hopefully you've taken advantage of all the sweet suggestions the staff here have been making in regard to the gift-giving part of 2008. You're totally done with shopping. Forever. For your mom, for your BFF -- for yourself, even. You never want to see another receipt or whip out your credit card or push over a baby stroller in a mad rush at the mall again. This is what as known as Holiday Shopping Exhaustion, and this week's Bits & Pieces promises to gel with that deep-seating amygdalic response by having a No Shopping week. (And in case you're not done with shopping, don't worry. Consider these suggestions for "taking a break.")

+ What is the opposite of "shopping"? Winning free stuff! The new blog free!grechen assembles tons of information about fashion-y giveaways in one convenient place. Yesterday's post has informed me that I can win a caramel-colored handbag by Jenny Yuen. And you can't win if you don't enter... (Meggy)

+ And now that you have all of that free time that used to be taken up by shopping, you can goof around with your hair... which is what I've been doing. Over the years I've tried foul-smelling perms, Velcro rollers, and pin curl techniques to try and get that curly-headed mop I've always longed for. Right now my new thing is rag rolls, which make me feel super-Old-Tymey (especially if I'm sitting around in a bath robe and painting my nails while my hair dries). Learn how to do them here. (Meggy)

+ Amelia's gorgeous zine Doublespeak is available on Etsy. Especially notable in Issue 3 is her guide to building and maintaining a comprehensive vintage wardrobe. Take her word for it; she's worked vintage retail and owns some of the most gorgeous clothes I've ever seen. The zine is full of practical advice about things like stains and caring for delicate fabrics. A must-have if you're into vintage. Also included are bits about sandwiches, funerals, and mockingbirds. (Meggy)

+ In keeping with the "rad domesticity" theme of this post, Alicia's blog Bread & Honey is a beautiful space for her musings on cooking and life with her kidlets and gorgeous photography, etc. (Meggy)

Bits and Pieces: recession? what recession?

So if you don't look at the entire front page of the NYTimes, and instead think about the gift-giving season that is upon us, the following links and sales may amuse you:

+ Discounts on the Fall/Winter '08 collection can be had at the Lyell boutique at 173 Elizabeth Street. 40% off their loverly dresses and camisoles, all of which are out of my range financially but are oh-so-wonderful to gawk at and touch. Also: new Holiday collection of silk dresses! (173 Elizabeth Street, between Spring and Kenmare streets; 212-966-8484) (Meggy)

+ My beloved Black & Brown (vintage and designer resale that's way better than Buffalo Exchange) in San Jose, CA is having a Winter Fashion Show! Featuring designers Black and Brown, Adrea Cabera and jewelry designer J.S.s.N Couture. This is the place where I found the best tiny fitted black leather jacket. It has good mojo. Show starting at 10 PM, $15 at the door, $13 with RSVP. Saturday, December 20, 2008. (525 North 7th Street, San Jose, CA) (Meggy)

+ Books make great presents; it's a fact. Try Family Planning by Karan Mahajan, about a government minister with thirteen children. Heartbreaking hilarity ensues. Full disclosure: Karan is my friend. But he isn't giving me any of his royalties, I promise you that. (Meggy)

Bits and Pieces: being luxe and warm, sample sales, street style

As I write this I am horribly distracted by two thoughts: 1.) I only own one pair of pants and 2.) it is SNOWING outside. These two states of being cannot coexist. I need pants.

But while I contemplate pants, you should be contemplating the following:

+ LaROK, home of comfy tees and sexy dresses, is having a sample sale -- up to 75% off this season's collections. This sale will last from December 4th through December 6th, and will take place at 145 West 18th St., NYC (6th and 7th avenues). (Meggy)

+ Another aggregator hits the scene as streetstyl.es showcases the latest street style from the world's top fashion blogs. Classic favs like Style Bubble and The Sartorialist are present, as are less familiar blogs with equally fascinating sartorial swagger. Plus the site's got a fantastically clean layout. (Meggy)

+ Red Hot + Rio 2 Live!: an all-star benefit tribute to the music and culture of Brazil, namely, samba soul. Check out the website for a list of artists. December 4th and 5th at 8 PM, BAM Howard GIlman Opera House. Go and make merry for a good cause. (Meggy)

+ Speaking of WINTER GEAR, Minnie Rose is having a sample sale -- up to 80% off of all cashmere items, including shawls, scarves, gloves, tops, v-nck sweaters, ruffle cardigans, dresses, and even sweaters for your dog, if you are luxe and have a luxe dog. (264 W. 40th St. between7th and 8th Ave, December 8-December 12) (Meggy)
