Win A Whistle - And A NOGOODFORME.COM Sticker! - Just For Being Adorable

emilywhistle.jpg lizwhistle.jpg

(Above: Emily "Switchfoot" Richmond and Elizabeth "Black Eyes" Barker testing out their whistles last weekend at Neptune's Net in beautiful Malibu.)

Perhaps you heard from the Paste magazine website, or from this post on the vastly more illustrious NOGOODFORME.COM, that our buddy/videographer Emily Richmond is soon to set sail around the world (all by herself, at the tender age of 24!). We're trying to spread the word and help Emily raise the $8,000 she needs for her big adventure, and we'd love for you to help us out. So: if you post about Emily's circumnavigation on your blog/website by August 24, we'll send you a whistle and a NOGOODFORME.COM sticker* as a reward. It's that simple, sort of. Here are our three little rules:

-YOUR POST MUST LINK TO EMILY'S KICKSTARTER (because that's where people pledge money)

-YOUR POST MUST LINK TO NOGOODFORME.COM (because we are all wicked selfish and can never really get enough attention)

-YOUR POST MUST INFORM READERS THAT ALL PLEDGES NEED TO BE MADE BY AUGUST 31

Your post could also mention all the cool prizes people will get for pledging - like, if you pledge a buck, you'll get your signature on Emily's sailboat. Pledge $15, and you'll get a Polaroid photo from the trip. Pledge $30, and you'll get a sailor hat. Pledge $5,000 or more, and you get to name Emily's dinghy!

You could also post about Things To Do With Your Whistle, perhaps. A few bright ideas we've already come up with:

-Pretend you're a traffic cop or a lifeguard
-Pretend you're the dad in Sound of Music
-Pretend you're half-dead Kate Winslet at the end of Titanic

A whistle can also be a really sly way to transmit secret code to your "wingman" while out on the town. Like, for example, the other night Emily and I were at this party and Anthony Kiedis was there and I fell over and died kind of. But here's what could've happened instead: Anthony could've come up to me, brushed his chocolatey hair out of his eyes, pushed up the sleeves of his adorable cardigan and asked, "Hey, Black Eyes, I was thinking, if you're not doing anything after this, maybe you could come over to my place and we'll go for a midnight surf, eat some vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies on the beach, listen to Neil Young records, talk about our emotions, fool around a little, sleep the sleep of angels, wake up, I'll braid your hair and you'll braid mine, and then we'll go for breakfast at farmers market and live happily ever after or something?" And I'd smile sweetly and say, "Yeah, for sure, just hold on a second," then subtly lean over and blow three long whistles and one short (aka the "I'm Going Home With Anthony Kiedis And Then Marrying Him" signal). Then Emily would blow back one short whistle, give me the double thumbs-up, and we'd all be on our merry ways. So discreet!

But anyway, once you've posted, email the link and your mailing address to liz@nogoodforme.com. Clearly it's going to be a lot of fun.

*While stickers last. It's actually highly unlikely that I'm going to run out, but I suppose anything's possible. If I do run out, somehow, I'll send you a nautically themed mix CD instead of a sticker. Cool?

Giveaway: Tolani's Purple Morning Glory Scarf, Courtesy of Chickdowntown

tolanipurplemorninggloryscarf.jpg

See this scarf? I want it; I want it sooooooo bad. It's by Tolani and its name is Purple Morning Glory, and it's $99 and I want to wear it all the time this spring but I can't really have it right now. But it can be ALL YOURS for free, maybe, if you just shoot me an email and tell me one spring-themed post you'd like to see on nogoodforme.com this season. It can be about fashion or beauty or music or food or panda bears or anything, really - the only off-limits topic is "Spring Fashion Essentials," cuz we're already doing that. We'll announce the lucky winner in two weeks, and then shortly after that I'll ask you to let me borrow the scarf for just a month or three.

By the way, this giveaway is courtesy of Chickdowntown, one of our latest favorite sites for gazing longingly at oh-so-fabulous women's clothing from the likes of Velvet, Vera Wang, Rebecca Taylor, Rag & Bone, and C&C California. The largest online retailer of Black Halo, Chickdowntown also features CC Skye, Genetic Denim, See by Chloe, Rachel Pally, and Elizabeth and James - plus dozens and dozens of other designers who make us go all swoony.

To keep up-to-date on what's new at Chickdowntown, check out their revamped fashion blog and follow them on Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and Chick Downtown TV.

Contest/Giveaway: chicBuds Headphones! With Real Swarovski Bling!

chicBuds.jpg

OK, this promotion is for audiophiles, lovers of ironic bling and/or real Swarovski crystals, and basically anyone who could use a new pair of headphones or two. And in a dose of the double whammy ka-pow! type of gesture, this giveaway could also take care of your stocking stuffer needs in terms of holiday shopping this year. If that doesn't perk your ears up, then maybe your ears don't deserve the sets of chicBuds headphones we have to give away to you. What can I say? They're headphones, so they bring you the joy of music in the shortest distance from device to brain as possible. These ones, though, are blinged out with real Swarovski crystals, which can hypnotize you with their sparkliness. (Literally: I sat in Starbucks a few days ago with mine while trying to pound out some stuff for school and I kept getting distracted by my "oooh shiny!" moments of reverie.) They are also super-practical, because they have a built-in cord retractor that allows the cord to expand and retract to various lengths, so shizzit don't get all tangled in your bag or on whoever. (People getting tangled in my headphones cords = yes, it has happened to me.) There's a clip that stops the cord from bouncing around like a jerk, too. And in my personal experience, these get a lot of compliments from burly doormen in New York. I find this really odd but charming.

ANYWAY: chicBuds is kitting us out with a kind of TOO GOOD FOR YOU giveaway. We are bestowing these babies on TWO WINNERS, each of whom will get SIX PAIRS of chicBuds of various flavors, to do with what they wish: eat (no, don't do that!), accessorize with according to mood, bribe minor officials, confuse themselves with abundance, give as stocking stuffers for the holidaze to friends and loved ones. (Actually, I think you should give them as New Years' gifts. I am really into the idea of New Years gifts.) Each headphone set retails for $45 at places like Dillards and Fred Meyer, so that means each prize set is worth $270. THAT IS CRAZY. But hey, we do love being the crazy for you here at nogoodforme.

SO THIS IS WHAT YOU DO:

1. Comment in this entry in order to enter the giveaway! (One entry per email address, dudes.)
2. Comment with your favorite songs from 2008! I want to know, for reals and for serious, 'cause every year I make a year-end "THIS IS THE YEAR IN SOUND" mix CD and am looking for new (song) blood.
3. Bonus double entry for those who can give links to mp3s where you can download the aforementioned favorite songs from this year! (Be too legit to quit on this, mmmkay?)
4. This is open till THIS SUNDAY, December 21, 2008, 12PM PST. And then: NO MORE CONTEST FOR YOU!

BTW, if you're really anxious to enter this and are in it to win it, there are lots of blogs running this contest (in different permutations):

TOO GIFTED FOR YOU + Reader Discount (!) + Giveaway (!!!): For Dudes Who Like Subversive Polo Shirts

Attus Apparel polo shirts, 70% off if you use the coupon code

Wow, this entry is so off-the-hook with all sorts of reader goodness that I don't even know how to begin. Deep breath: Attus Apparel makes polo shirts, but not just any old polo shirts. Instead of featuring some lame little alligator, polo player or tiger on the front like some French investment banker or whatever, they feature emblems of skateboards, punk rockers, beer bottles, the middle finger -- basically subversive little graphics that speak more towards being a smirky, smart-ass 14-year old boy than being a fancy-pants grown dude. Attus have been written up all over the place from Fashionista to the New York Times and stuff, and now they are here at nogoodforme and are giving you readers a mega-whopping gigundo 70% off discount. Um, 70%? For reals? That shizzit is TEN TIMES better than a sample sale. Hell, it's better than Target! For those looking for gifts for that kinda strait-laced brother-in-law who works in banking or real estate or insurance and you just KNOW they're bored out of their mind when they go golfing with the boss -- this is perfect. It's also kind of perfect for that subversive preppy dude in your dorm. Or your little bro. Or your big bro. Or your dude best friend. Or just a dude you know who'd wear a polo shirt to begin with. Some dudes wear polo shirts, right? Anyway: the discount code is the classic nogoodforme phrase TooDudeForYou; use it at checkout and have a blast robbing the bank over the holidays, okay?

Anyway, if you really can't swing a 70% discount or you just like to live all edgy and risky, we also have two shirts to give away: for those with an inner metalhead, we have a hesher polo shirt, and we also have a broken heart skateboard polo for the, um, skaterboarders. (P.S., if you are a hippie skater, let me introduce you to Liz Barker, the best girl in America. LJ is the best girl in Canada, and I'm a woman, thank you very much. P.P.S, if you are a girl who likes polo shirts, Attus cuts their shirts pretty slim, so you could pretend to be trying to win this for your skinny manchild beau. I won't tell.) If you want to win a shirt, you have till this Friday at noon (Pacific time) to leave a comment in this entry and tell me the name of your favorite skater and/or favorite metal band EXCEPT Guns 'N Roses. That one is mine. Okay, you can say Guns 'N Roses, but only if you mean it and tell me your favorite song off of Chinese Democracy. Thank you very much and have a good day.

(P.P.P.S - Don't forget to put an email address when you comment.)

Reader Discount: 10% Off at Baudelaire Soaps!

Who doesn't love pretty-looking and -smelling bathroom stuff? It makes the practicality of bodily hygiene into a luxury, it's useful to both give and receive as a gift (hint, hint) and it just smells and feels good. Baudelaire Soaps is one of those bath product companies that are all French-y, tasteful and quietly elegant; using their stuff will allow you to convince yourself that you're in Provence, at least in the confines of your own shower. The kind folks there were totes sweet and thoughtful enough to give nogoodforme readers a 10% off coupon code that's good for anything in the store. AND it lasts till spring, so it's not just a holiday thing, either! Go to: Baudelaire Soaps, code is NoGoodSoap2008 until April 2009! Below are some of my picks:

baudelairesoaps_favorites.jpg

1. Provence Sante Bergamot Eau de Toilette, $30. I'm in love with all things bergamot, which is kind of spicy but light and citrus-y. This is an incredibly generous amount of fragrance for $30, the kind of thing to remind you of summer.

2. Jardin de l'Olivier Wooden Gift Box set, $45. I'd love this just for the packaging alone! Luckily, olive oil moisturizing anything is totally great for your skin, too.

3. Chianti Cashmere Soap and Bath sampler, $25. I'm such a bath product whore that I've taken to buying samplers of things just so I don't get bored and suffer from product ADD. The idea of "liquid cashmere" is kind of mind-bogglingly sensual beyond words.

4. Essence 2-Bar Gift Box in sandalwood/rosewood, $12.50. Sandalwood and rosewood are some of my favorite smells: sultry but natural. Trust me, this soap smells goooooood.

5. Sunny! Lip Balm, $3. I think this is charming just for the bumblebee graphic alone! SPF 15 makes this balm good for you -- and it tastes like creamsicles!

6. Jardin de l'Olivier leap soap, $12. It's almost a shame to use this organic soap because the shape is so pretty!

Too UFC For You: The First Assignment

Laura Jane's Ultimate Fashion Challenge (tm) proved to be so fun AND enlightening AND amusing AND intense that it is such a shame to see it end. Who knew that fashion could be the jumping-off point for a conceptual art experiment that altered the way one consumed and related to clothing? Who knew that the UFC would be as entertaining and avant-wack as it was? (Actually, we all knew -- LJ has a way of making EVERYTHING entertaining and avant-wack.) So we sat down (or flopped, or sprawled, or whatever) and thought about how to keep the UFC spirit going -- without making LJ do another sartorial equivalent of an endurance race. We also thought about how innately awesome the Beautifully Worn art show we curated was, and how we could share that spirit to the larger Web audience. We also thought about how the Fashion Industrial Complex (tm) fosters this intensely neurotic way of relating to the daily necessity of wearing clothes and how both the UFC and Beautifully Worn were about intensely personal ways of wearing clothes and how this was all a good and true thing.

What was the solution? Since we believe here at nogoodforme that:

(1) fashion should be inclusive and groovy;
(2) how real people wear clothing is infinitely more interesting than anything;
(3) making up outfits can be a way to stimulate creativity and spur imaginative flights of fancy and thinking rather than just announcing your coolness, status or power in the world;
(4) ACTIVE IS BETTER THAN PASSIVE;

We therefore decided to extend the UFC to everyone. That's right: YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN ULTIMATE FASHION CHAMPION.

Do not fear: this DOES NOT mean we will make you wear every single item of clothing that you own. No. This will not happen. Instead, this will be the drill:

1. We will ANNOUNCE an "assignment." This assignment will be related to outfits, fashion and clothing. This assignment will be small in scope and easy to complete. It should only involve one outfit. This assignment should also be fun and flexible.

2. If you so choose, you can COMPLETE the assignment through the various options given: usually this involves emailing us a picture and/or some words, but you can also post results in your own blog.

3. Assignments will be DUE by the first of the following month.

4. Sometime after that, we will COMPILE the results into one giant mega-report post to share all your beautiful ingenuity and creativity in one place.

Since this is all an experiment, we have no idea how it will pan out, but at the very least: we all at nogoodforme will be doing this. But we encourage everyone to do it! Because, dudes, fashion is not a spectator sport! Don't hate, participate! It's more fun when it's everyone!

AND NOW THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT:

Recreate or reinterpret a favorite outfit from when you were half your age now (i.e., if you're 28, recreate/reinterpret your favorite outfit from when you were 14.) Wear this for one day and record how it felt to be wearing this outfit. Why was it your favorite? What is different about wearing this outfit now? What is similar? Or has nothing changed?

Due: December 1, 2008

Send: words and/or a picture to ngfm.ufc (at) gmail (dot) com. OR: feel free to post this in a blog entry of your own. Send us a link to your blog entry at the aforementioned email address and we will link to you when we do the report by mid-December.

And remember: HAVE FUN.

Need inspiration? See:

Blow it up and make it a poster, yo!

Take the nogoodforme Reader Survey! And maybe win a cool Boy Meets Girl t-shirt!

We've been in a constant state of psyched-ness since Tuesday night, when voting clearly worked for once in America. Maybe you are too? Do you want to make your opinion known again? We're just a lil ol' fashion blog, but we want to know what you, dear readers, want to see more of here. As a thank-you, if you give us your email (which we WON'T do anything spammy with), you'll be entered in a drawing to win a cutie-pie t-shirt from Boy Meets Girl, which recently had a tote bag featured in this week's episode of "Gossip Girl." (And by the way, not really digging Jenny's new quasi-couture-meets-Avril Lavigne mall punk stylee. Why are there so many Jenny storylines this season? She annoys me.) The t-shirt looks like the one below, only ours is brown with a gold logo. (It's pretty much the cutest logo ever, no?) It's dope, super-soft and well-cut; you'll like it...and it could be yours if you fill in a survey. But even if you don't want a t-shirt, we would still dig if you filled it out anyway. We honestly can't wait to hear from you to help better direct our content!

TO TAKE OUR READER SURVEY:
HAVE FUN HERE.

A t-shirt from Boy Meets Girl, a variation of which you could possibly win from nogoodforme:

THANK YOU.

Spotlight on StyleDetox.com (and a coupon code for readers!)

The indie online boutique Style Detox was started up by a former music industry publicist in San Francisco, and the link to music shows through its indie- and rockabilly-influenced inventory and jewelry selection. There are dresses that would make an early Gwen Stefani salivate (including a checker picnic print halter dress so cute that it makes me wish I could wear gingham without looking like a dork), and super-cute quirky jewelry selections. The site also carries a carefully selected collection of vintage items of all sorts, and best of all -- everything is super reasonably-priced! Which also means, I've noticed, that things sell out fast, so my advice is to pick up what you want when you can. There's no excuse not to, especially since Style Detox is offering a coupon code for 10% off for nogoodforme readers: just enter nogoodforme10 at checkout and let the magic happen. (By the way, this coupon won't expire, like, ever! Fire at will!) They also donated some adorable jewelry to our Spirit Animal House charity raffle, so clickety-click on the little button below to buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win these (and many, many other wonderful things!)

Giveaway: Handmade Flammable heart necklace!

As I've mentioned on thirteen trillion different occasions, I have a really tough time with jewelry. When it comes to the art of matching jewelry to a particular outfit, I'm like nogoodforme.com's equivalent on that kid in second grade who was still working on their three times tables when everybody else was throwing round twelve times twelve like it wasn't no thang at all.

Luckily for me, Toronto-based jewelry line Flammable performs the impossible task of "layering necklaces" on my behalf. Whenever I try to wear more than one necklace, I always end up just tangling all the chains together/having an anxiety attack. This is no longer an issue in my life: Flammable designer Laura Garland scours the continent for alternately lovely, charming, vintage, sweet, weird, cool and always-killer lockets and charms, then assembles them in aesthetic combos I'm too stupid to put together on my own, and strings them up in this Flammable-specific method that somehow makes them hang perfectly on your body and never get tangled. I think it's called magic.

Luckily for you, we have a one-of-a-kind handmade Flammable necklace to give away here at nogoodforme.com! It's the one in the first picture below, featuring the textured gold heart (which represents Kat), cowboy boot (Liz) and sweetie-pie green baby heart (Laura). Beneath it you will see some other fly Flammable creations available for your purchasing pleasure over at Flammable's Etsy Shop). All you have to do to get your grubby and/or adorable little paws all over this necklace is:

Leave a comment below with your name, a valid e-mail address, and (most importantly), an idea for a Laura Jane Fashion (or non-fashion) Challenge! Whoever comes up with the coolest challenge idea not only scores a free necklace, but furthermore, gets to see their challenge executed by yours truly! If that isn't a win-win situation, I don't know what is. GOOD LUCK, & HAPPY IDEATING!

PS: That model is SO SEXY.
